Why Use Natural Refrigerants?

By Blog Team 8 years ago 1553 Views No comments

ABS Refrigerators now have natural refrigerants. “Natural” always sounds great, but what does it actually mean in regards to refrigerants and how does it benefit you?

Refrigerants are chemicals used to cause cooling and refrigeration. “Natural” doesn’t mean non-chemical, it merely means that the chemical occurs naturally in the environment rather than being created in a lab. Previously, most cooling devices such as refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners used chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFCs), which were developed in the 1930s by Thomas Midgley. However, in the 1970s these were discovered to have a negative impact on the ozone layer and the environment, so work began to find a substitute. Now, hydrocarbons, a naturally occurring type of chemical, are replacing them. They reduce gas emissions significantly.

Hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants have benefits aside from the environmental. They are more energy efficient, and consequently cost efficient. If you’re still using a refrigerator or freezer that uses CFCs, replacing it with a refrigerator that uses HC refrigerants will save you money on your electric bill and ultimately pay for itself.
